Timothy Hurley
B.F.A. Chicago Academy Of Fine Arts, 1976

My art has always been involved with the documentation of Time/Space/Chance. Over the years my work has gone through certain modalities, but its themes have remained constant, based on moments of personal experience that are imbedded in my subconscious, waiting to be recalled and reshaped to fit the image at the time of execution.
Certain themes and reoccurring ideas appear in my paintings, stairs, steps, and staggered inclines as an example represent metaphors for a personal nemeses.
I would have to classify myself as an expressionist with drawing and painting being my primary choices of visual expression. I have explored other media as well. For example, I have built complementary, enigmatic frames to reinforce some of the ideas in my paintings, these in turn become integral parts of a particular piece. I have worked with papier maché building small mixed media projects as well as maquettes and large sculptured works.
I was first introduced to drawing with colored pencils at the age of six. I had just completed a lengthy stay in the hospital and my mother's co-worker gave me a set of prismacolor pencils. It was then I began to enjoy drawing and expressing myself. Since that time I have always tried to keep that child-like enthusiasm and joy in making my art. The ability to express oneself should never be taken for granted. By the time I left art school I knew I wanted to teach art in some capacity. Fortunately, I was able to fulfill that promise and had the opportunity to work both with children and adults during my teaching career.
