Mieke Zuiderweg is photographer/artist living in Uptown, Chicago. She has a BFA from MSU, and has worked as a photojournalist for the past decade.
The photographic series #1 and #2 are shot with a Holga camera, a cheap plastic device that takes medium format film and has the ability to capture images in an off-beat way.
Holga series 1 is of roadside statues left over from the 1950's, when giant concrete men advertised everything from car sales to chicken and biscuits. Shot from a low angle, the statues become overwhelming in scale, making it hard to tell if it is indeed giant, or tiny.
Holga series 2 is of mannequins in store front windows. Reflections of opposing buildings, clouds and trees skew the reality of the figure, which stares unblinking into a world that is fragmented and fuzzy.
